Billy had just put the last box in the trailer when a black van stopped behind him with three men in it. They waited and watched him for a minute or two before the driver stepped out and approached him. âExcuse me, son, do you know where Samantha Page lives?â
Billy was startled by the manâs appearance. The look was all too familiar from his recent dealings with the loan shark. The scars on his face and his aggressive stance painted a clear picture of the sort of man he was. And who wore a jacket on a hot summerâs day? Billy was pretty sure he was concealing a weapon, just as the loan shark heavies had when theyâd approached him.
âSamantha who?â he said.
âSamantha Page. I have a package to deliver to her,â the thug said impatiently.
âNo, sorry. I donât know anyone by that name. Iâm just moving out of here myself after a short stay so I canât help you,â Billy replied without faltering.
âOkay, kid. Thanks.â As he walked into the building, Billy noticed a bulge in the shape of a gun under his jacket.
Billy tied up the last of the boxes, relieved he had already locked Samâs apartment and didnât need to go back in. While the thug was still inside asking around, he quickly drove off. Although fairly sure he wasnât being followed, he took the long route back to the university and kept his eyes on the rearview mirror. All the way, he wondered why people like that would be asking after his Sam.
After ensuring no one was following him, he drove into the university grounds, parked, and ran to her unit. âSam, guess what happened?â
âWhat happened? Are you all right?â Sam asked.
âAfter locking up your apartment up, I was tying down the boxes in the trailer when three men in a black van stopped directly behind me. The driver got out and asked if I knew a Samantha Page.â
âDid you say three men?â Sam asked with a quiver in her voice.
âYes, three men in a black van.â
âWhat did you tell them?â There was fear in her eyes.
âI said I didnât know anyone by that name and told them I was moving out after a short stay. I made sure I wasnât followed.â
She looked unsettled. âWhy? How did you know to do that?â
âIt was easy. They looked like the thugs who work for the loan shark and immediately I knew something was wrong.â Billy noticed the change in her face. It confirmed his speculations. âThere was no way I wanted them going anywhere near you.â
âThank you, honey. You are fantastic.â She threw her arms around him.
After holding her for a minute, he drew away, taking her hands in his. âWhy are people like that after you, sweetheart? And donât give me the âtrust meâ bullshit. You need to tell me just like I told you about my gambling problem, okay? We need to start being honest with each other.â
To his relief, she agreed. âYouâre right, sweetheart, but
